STRONG BOND DOG TRAINING FAQ'S
Frequently Asked Questions
At Strong Bond Dog Training, we offer private dog training lessons, psychiatric service dog training, and therapy dog training. Our customized programs cater to puppies, beginners, and advanced students, ensuring every dog and owner receive the guidance they need.
Trust-based dog training focuses on building a strong relationship between you and your dog through clear communication, leadership, and service.
Instead of relying solely on obedience training, we prioritize understanding your dog’s needs and motivations.
This approach leads to long-term behavioral change, making your dog more cooperative, responsive, and eager to follow your lead.
Our dog training programs incorporate positive reinforcement techniques alongside loving but firm course corrections when necessary.
We focus on clear communication and trust-building to help your dog understand what behaviors are appropriate in different situations.
We’re not fans of e-collars or prong collars because they work by adding discomfort or fear of correction, which can damage trust and create more anxiety (especially in sensitive or reactive dogs).
They may stop a behavior in the moment, but they often don’t teach the dog what to do instead or address the root cause of a behavior.
We specialize in training reactive dogs by investigating the root cause of their behavior.
We then use gradual exposure, structured exercises, and calm leadership to help a reactive dog feel more secure in those situations and less reactive to triggers.
We can help you reduce indoor barking by finding the cause (alerts, boredom, anxiety, habit) and teaching your dog what to do instead.
We’re not trying to silence your dog completely, since barking is communication.
We’ll teach “appropriate” indoor responses, like a brief alert, a lower-volume bark, or even a quiet grumble, followed by settling calmly.
We help dogs understand that being on a leash isn't the end of the fun.
They can meet their needs and wants, whether it's sniffing, exploring, or saying hi to friends, while also understanding the boundaries of leash-time.
We will guide you in choosing the right leash length and walk style to create a stress-free experience with your dog.
Off-leash training is included in the advanced stages of our programs.
We will practice different ways to build reliable recall skills, so that your dog responds even in highly distracting environments.
We can help you prepare for the exact Voice & Sight control standards and guide you through what you need to pass.
For Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks, you’ll generally need to complete the required Voice & Sight education, provide proof of current rabies vaccination (and a City of Boulder dog license if you’re a Boulder resident), and register for the tag.
We can help you build reliable recall and social skills so that you and your dog are ready to hit the trails.
Reliable recall is a crowning achievement for most of our graduates.
Through trust-building exercises and reward-based reinforcement, we help your dog sees you as their safest and most exciting place to be, no matter the environment or distractions.
The best thing you can do is start puppy training early.
Your puppy is always learning so the sooner you teach them boundaries, communication, and establish your leadership, the easier it will be as they grow.
Our puppy training programs focus on socialization, leash training, basic requests, and trust-building, ensuring your pup grows into a well-balanced adult dog.
We offer private, in-person dog training in Boulder, Niwot, Longmont, Prospect, Louisville, Superior, and Broomfield, Colorado.
Our group training class is available in the summer for clients who have completed our Pack Transformation (Part I) Program.
These classes help reinforce leash manners, advanced skills, and socialization in a distracting environment while strengthening your dog's bond with you.
We offer in-home, private dog training sessions when appropriate.
A small travel fee may apply depending on your location.
We can provide virtual dog training sessions and access to our online program materials for those outside the Boulder area.
This includes a copy of our book, our video program, reference guides with weekly homework, and access to Alex's office hours for phone check ins.
Board-and-train's can create quick changes in a controlled setting, but many dogs struggle to repeat those behaviors once they’re back home, mainly because the person wasn’t trained.
It can also add stress for your dog by removing them from their normal environment, and you have less visibility into exactly how your dog was handled day-to-day.
Our focus is long-term success: we coach you and your dog together, in real-life situations, so the results actually stick at home and in public.
Our therapy dog training program prepares dogs for volunteer work in hospitals, schools, and community programs.
We focus on advanced skills, behavioral stability, and social confidence, so that your dog remains calm and responsive in a wide-variety of environments.
A psychiatric service dog is trained to assist individuals with mental health conditions through specific tasks and behavioral support.
Our service dog training program is designed for both the dog and the handler, creating team work and a healing lifestyle.
At the end of our training, we offer a psychiatric service dog testing and certification to qualifying duos.
We can help you prepare for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test by training the exact skills the evaluator will score.
Such as calm greetings, loose-leash walking, polite handling, reliable stay/recall, and neutrality around people and dogs.
If you tell us where you plan to test, we can tailor your sessions and run a full “mock test” so you feel confident on test day.
Obedience training focuses on making the dog comply with commands, often without addressing the root cause of behavioral issues.
Trust-based dog training, on the other hand, looks at why your dog is acting a certain way and guides them through clear communication, calm leadership, and relationship-building.
This leads to lasting behavioral change instead of just surface-level fixes.
